New York City has been invaded by the Sex and the City crew. Although photos were only released today, they are featured in a number of blogs and websites. In case you haven't stumbled acrossthem already, here are some...

Sarah Jessica Parker/Carrie Bradshaw in sparkly blue/purple dress, white belt with golden buckle and a hot pink bag. A tad bit to many different strong colors in one outfit for my taste. I would have matched the dress with some retro white sunglasses and a strawbag for a more summery/beach feel. But love the shoes, so they stay on!

Urgh - What happened here?! I hope this is a "thinking about the past" scene and not supposed to illustrate 2009/2010. The make up makes SJP look like a she-male. If and ONLY if I'm headed to a costume party would I dare to attempt to recreate this look and I would add a pair of big (actually HUGE), silver hoop earrings to finish the look off.

I have of course saved the best for last. Elegant white dress, well accessorized with golden sparkly shoes (...straight from a fairy tale), chunky necklace and cute gold clutch. Only thing I would change would be to replace SJP with moi...

Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

Blondes have more fun...

My blonde friend's bday is coming up so I was browsing the world wide web for gift ideas/inspiration when I suddenly and stumbled accross this...(no words can describe how fun/smart/cute I find this so the pictures will have to do all the speaking in this post)
<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_scnH87aEylc/SpWuynZGA_I/AAAAAAAAAGQ/gZ7xA9taOU4/s400/amd_keyboard.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; Coco Chanel. What you may not know is that she was born today in 1883 to the salesman Albert Chanel and his wife Jeanne Devolle, who died 12 years later. Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel grew up in an orphanage where she was taught seamstress. It was the era of Jane Austen – when hats, petticoats and to-faint-for-corsets made up the basic wardrobe of any girl, except the young Coco Chanel who preferred slightly loosely fitted, masculine and sporty garments which allowed her to stay conscious the entire evening.

She started off her career as a hat maker and the Chanel fashion house was founded in 1910. About her clothes, she once said: “I gave women a sense of freedom; I gave them back their bodies: bodies that were drenched in sweat, due to fashion’s finery, lace, corsets, underclothes, padding”. Her clothes were about freedom, simplicity and elegance. This becomes very clear in the recently released movie, Coco avant Chanel, where Audrey Tautou portrays a strong minded, independent young woman. After watching the movie and despite knowing that it may not be 100% accurate, I now see the Chanel brand in a different light. I admire the strong and determined woman who went against the existing fashion and set the new fashion.

Today the fashion house is headed up by Karl Lagerfeld and sometimes I wonder if the Coco has not lost along the way. Their cosmetics contains so much perfume that it is giving me rashes and headache rather than freedom, their clothes are so expensive that I would have to sell my body to afford a piece. Even if elegance is still lurking in a corner, Coco must has taken the simplicity with her to her grave.

Oh well, what do I know?!

Happy birthday Coco!

Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

30 things to do before 30

Try snowboarding

Try rock climbing

Try surfing

Try diving

Been a tourist in New York

Been a resident of New York

Been a tourist in London

Been a resident of London

Tea and scones at the Ritz

Dine at Claridge's

Experience the northern lights

Do 'Europe by train' - Slightly off the topic, but here’s a Zoe confession: “Hi, my name is Zoe and I have been lost whilst driving with a Sat Nav”

Back on the jungle track, my current ocean of inspiration, when it comes to work place fashion, is Kim Raver’s character in Lipstick Jungle, the chic, slick and fists-of-steel Nico Reilly. Her wardrobe cheekily sneaks in carefully selected bold pieces with ample oomph which turns the plain office attire into a personal power suit.

More often than not, this magic piece is a necklace. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a picture of my all time favourite Nico outfit. More frustratingly, I cant even recall which episode it was featured in! She was wearing a black shirt which was appropriately buttoned, i.e. no attention seeking cleavage and not fully buttoned. Underneath the shirt, she was wearing a big, bold, beautifully detailed bright coloured necklace that was half concealed by the shirt collar but rebelliously peeking through the opening of her shirt. If any one knows which episode this magnificent assemble was spotted, please let me know.

Until then, you will have to make do with the following master pieces:

Imagine how plain this would have looked with a thin silver chain would have looked around her neck.

On its own, would you have worn that necklace to work? Not in my wildest dreams would that necklace have been allowed to even cross my mind! But paired with a sweater in the same colour-family, it looks great.
For those of you who still feel that this is a bit too much, opt for a similar couple, but in conservative colours such as black, grey, sand, eggshell, cream, off white - OK, I'm taking the piss, but you get my point.

At her late husband's funeral - with ingredients so simple and classic like pearls and black, it is easy to end up with something conservative and border line boring. The two strings of big pearls adds the oomph factor.

A tad bit too much cleavage for my taste but notice the dramatic bows on each sleeve - she certainly got one or two ace up those sleeves

Finally three beauties on my wish list: from left to right, Dori Csengeri, Agate Cabochon and Siman Tu.

The Fine Print:
A warning or disclaimer may be called for here, if not careful, the, what I call 'magic pieces', could easily result in you experiencing one, or several, of the following:
• The curly finger from your manager for inappropriate attire
• A note from HR saying that you’ve offended half of the office
• A brown envelope
• An arrest by the fashion police
• Random people asking you where the costume party is.
The above list is by no means exhaustive and I, Zoe de la Jacobs will, at all times, not be responsible nor assume any potential liability as a result of what others choose to wear.
Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

W*nk#r

13.46
From: Zoe
To: Mr. Client
Dear Mr. Client,
Hope you are well. She also represents the human characteristics, that is supposedly present, but well hidden in every executive and powerful business woman.

In the pilot episode, Wendy has to fire an underperforming movie director but he failed to get the message. When reciting the event for her friends (note, these are not exact quotes):
Nico: ...hang on - what do you mean HE won't let YOU fire HIM?
Wendy: oh, yeah, well, I called him and I fired him and we hugged
Nico: YOU HUGGED SOMEONE YOU FIRED?
Wendy: I've huged and fired before. You don't have to be cold and nasty to be in charge.

I admire the Wendy philosophy and try, very hard, to think and behave in true Wendy spirit, but it is difficult when you have mentally challenged colleagues...
Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

It's a jungle out there!

Based on a novel by Candace Bushnell, Lipstick Jungle tells the story of three friends;
• Nico Reilly – editor-in-chief of Bonfire Magazine and married to Charles (who eventually dies) but has an affair with a 25 year old Kirby.
• Wendy Healy – president of Parador Pictures (until she gets fired) and married to Shane with whom she has two children.
• Victory Ford – fashion designer and dates (and later gets engaged to) billionaire Joe Bennett.

These three women are my heroes. They are funny, silly, girly, powerful and more importantly - they are all passionate about their careers without compromising on the family/social life aspect. Is this realistic? – I will leave that for another post, or perhaps even a book. For now, let’s assume that all clouds are pink and roses grow on thorn-less stems.

The true reason for having devoured all twenty episodes is the fashion it displays. Nico has given me hope of finding a way for my personality to shine through black/marine/grey office uniforms and watching Victory has showed me how to spice up my ‘free time wardrobe’ and even encouraged me to take up sewing again! Needless to say, these 47 minutes episodes have had a significant impact on my wardrobe and life.

If you are scratching your head, trying to figure out where you’ve heard that name - Candace Bushell, she wrote a column in the New York Observer called Sex and the City, which later became the foundation for another TV series and movie.
Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

Boston Tea Party

Weekend again, I am now convinced that someone is systematically stealing 2-3 hours from me everyday! Because it was just January and now it is April?!? How did that happen?

Anyways, on the good side, spring is here - or so it feels. P, C and I strolled around in central London. The highlight of the day was the magical Fortnum&Mason on Piccadilly. Stepping through the green doors works like a time maschine for me, leaving the 21st century London for the Jane Austin world. The thick carpets, the detailed and rich details of the interior design, the impressive wooded furnitures, and of course, the tea! I can imagine the characters from any Jane Austin novel picking out tea from one of the many loose tea jars behind the counter, covering the entire wall.
We returned to the 21st century with lovely green tea, a fruty tea, jam and sugar stirrers as souvenires from our mini trip back in time.

The hats and gloves completes the look by adding that extra layer of ladylike elegance, even when are plowing through the fields.

So sweet and summery

May not be the best photo of Mr. Darcy, so lets focus on the simple yet cute dress and romantic hair instead!
Oh, if the men would start dressing like this again. ;)

Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

Networking

After work drinks with one of the leading law firms made me realise that not all lawyers are dull and boring. For some, completely unjustified reason, I previously ranked them after librarians (nothing against librarians) on the boring-list.

Setting the scene: To facilitate our ongoing relationship, our team was invited for drinks and canapés in the private rooms of XYZ LLP.

Result: I went with the intention to show my face, conduct a few stiff conversations about work, weather and the public transport system in London. Apart from the first three and a half minutes with one of the partners, I completely forgot that this was a work do. We ticked off topics such as travel, embarrassing party moments and theme party costumes (including the dearly loved and hated bunny suit!)

Epilogue: The importance of networking is often underestimated and neglected when in reality it plays a significant part in people’s careers. Networking is not only about who you know, but how you conduct yourself in a professional social environment. Many see professional and social as two distinct, unrelated situations, and in some cases they are, but more often than not, they are intermingled and mastering the networking evenings can be just as important as perfecting your due diligence.
Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

Design Museum

You’ve got to love them, lazy Sundays. Spent mine catching up with my favourite P, after a long brunch at the Real Greek we strolled aimlessly eastwards, enjoying the first sun beams, mingling with the hoard of tourists and ended up at the Design Museum. I’ve only been here once before, for a Jimmy Choo exhibition. Today’s menu featured the Brit Insurance Design Award and Hussein Chalayan - it went down like a juicy stake with tender asparagus followed by a gooey rich chocolate mousse. Highly recommend it if you haven’t been there yet/before.

The Brit Insurance Design Award covers a broad mix of categories such as fashion, architecture and media. My personal favourites are:

Miuccia Prada’s Trembled Blossoms video, a short colourful anime video with a magical fairytale showcasing Prada clothes and bags.

Video showing the set up of Viktor&Rolf’s dollhouse exhibition at the Barbican Exhibit. I'm a sucker for 'behind the scenes' shows and this was a fastforward, 24/7, uncut video of the room where construction workers built the giant dollhouse.

Is Not Magazine Issue #11. Poor P had to drag me away from this exhibit - a huge piece of wall on which loads of scribbles, random articles and fun stories were printed. I was spell bound by the lay out and the randomness of the content.

Hussein Chalayan is a Cypriot designer and Central Saint Martins graduate. He is famous for his innovative designs and use of unconventional materials in his collections. As for the highlights:

Video of his Spring Summer 2007 collection, loved the transforming dresses which are not only beautiful to look at, but a dream come true for indecisive time optimists like myself. Imagine, two or more outfits in one! A single item that will take you from day to evening. Can’t wait for this to become available to us common folks.

Video of a girl travelling in a pod displayed in 5 screens from different angles. Must sound strange and my vocabulary is not able to make it justice even if I try. The effect of the multiple screens was an incredibly engaging video where I felt like I was the one travelling in the pod.

This dress. I am currently working on a deal with ‘two up’ (my manager’s boss), he is what you would get if you merge Donald Duck and a politician, (pick a politician, aaannnyyy politician!) and this morning, he finishes off our catch up meeting with a ‘make yourself available for lunch with the client at 12.00’. I don’t mind client lunches, but had, since some time back, accepted an invitation to attend a corporate lunch event starting at 13.00. Luckily both lunches were to be served in the office. Perhaps it is a consequence of the credit crunch but increasingly many of our corporate events are held in the office now days, not that I am complaining because it saves me from zipping from one end of London to another. Red lipstick, red coats, red scarfs, red hats, red bags, red shoes, red shoelaces, even red busses and red phone booths!! Ok, the busses and phone booths might have been red before yesterday. It is interesting how by knowing something and by consciously looking for particular details, you see it everywhere – but without the knowledge of the Red Nose Day, my brain wouldn’t have picked it up. It makes me think, how much information do we just zoom by everyday, that our brain processes without actually processing it.
Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

We are all turkeys

Picked up City A.M. on my way to the office, the front page quotes Ben Bernake saying that the ‘Crunch may end this year’. My brain immediately jumps on the archive train and digs out an extract from the Black Swan. A farm turkey’s “confidence” is plotted on a graph over its lifetime. Each day, as the turkey is feed and given a roof over its head, its confidence and belief that the owners genuinely cares for him/her increases, until say two weeks before thanksgiving, when s/he is, sometimes ruthlessly, beheaded and s/he realises that what s/he interpreted as evidence of love, really was not. Lesson here is, we tend to look for evidence that supports our theory, fail to see the bigger picture and might even dismiss events that contradict our theory as ‘noice’. I am not criticising Mr Bernake, because I don’t think it is humanly possible to distinguish from true evidence of where this economy is headed from the ‘noice’. We might all just be a bunch of turkeys.

Copyright (c) 2009 Zoe de la Jacobs.

Lunch

My manager, your average British 50-something, 3 kids, beer drinking Man United maniac, is a rather relaxed dude for being a banker and made the mistake of letting me manage my time at work.
